Dog Daze of Summer: Pet Stain and Odor Control in Durango
23. July 2009 by Dean of Clean.
So it’s a hot July day and you’re relaxing in the recliner with limeade after a long morning’s gardening…and suddenly you notice a whiff of “bad dog” wafting through the room. Upon hesitant investigation, you find a fresh (or not-so-fresh) accident…how best to clean it up?
If the spot is fresh, you can get much of it out with this simple procedure for Pet Stain Cleaning for Rugs (I made the video using coke as the staining substance, but the same principles apply) Use a mixture of 4 parts water/1 part white vinegar as the final step, then blot well - this will help neutralize the urine.
For older spots, treat it first with the vinegar solution, then trot down to Healthy Hounds and Fat Cats or Creature Comforts here in Durango and invest in a bottle of Nature’s Miracle (also called Pet-Tastic) to apply after the initial cleanup. I recommend it only because I have many clients who swear by this stuff between professional cleanings.
Also, I’ve never seen it damage a carpet…unlike most of what sits on grocery store and big-box store shelves! Frequently, these cheap products have optical brighteners or bleaches that can harm your carpet, and I never recommend their use.
If you’ve worked on the surface without complete satisfaction as to the results, it may be time to look deeper. Every job is different, so we always recommend a professional inspection by an IICRC certified Odor Control specialist to determine the best course of action. Sometimes we can treat light to moderate odor from the top of the carpet, while severe odor situations may require the removal and replacement of pad as well as sealing the subfloor and professional cleaning of the carpet and backing before reinstallation.
In fact, it’s a good idea to have your carpet professionally cleaned at least once a year, in addition to your own spotting efforts. Make sure that your cleaner of choice is IICRC Certified in Carpet Cleaning and Odor Control and has plenty of experience. Thanks for reading, and have a great day!
